Mangina Morgan
Being the kind of photographer who likes to control the image, it was quite a challenge when Alex Gordienko and Tamara Rothstein from the magazine, Marfa Journal, asked me to collaborate on some self-portraits with Alex behind the camera and Tamara styling.
Tamara had been asking me for months to pose for the magazine as a woman and my first thought is “Who wants to see me as an old drag queen?” “I do!” she shouted. She said to me that watching me telling models how to pose she knew I had the body language to pull it off and a good pair of legs! At first I just kept saying no but after awhile I realized it was probably the most challenging thing I could do and she tormented me and mocked me to be brave. So in the end, the “No” became a “Yes” and I went for it.
It was extremely challenging to give myself over to the creative process but at the same time liberating and powerful. My new alter-ego needed a name and the opening shot says it all.
Welcome Mangina Morgan, you are well and truly OUT of the box.
